Designers We Love: The Huishan Zhang AW18 Collection

An overall transition highly reminiscent of Wong’s symbolic theme of emphasising the past while offering hope for the future that is prominent in his works.

Renowned director Wong Kar-Wai has always been recognised for his unique take on filmmaking, with a preference for bold and saturated visual styles, complemented with a focus on mood and atmosphere, leaving much to be questioned and anticipated by viewers. In his AW18 collection, Huishan Zhang has explored a similar narrative to the filmmaker’s work, particularly the films Chungking Express and 2046. The designer first channels dark sensuality and an air of mystery through his provocative adoption of patent vegan leather and sheer, delicately-sequinned nettings but as the collection progresses, its overarching trope evolves to one of optimism with the gradual introduction of brighter, iridescent hues, flowy fabrics and vivid blossom imagery – an overall transition highly reminiscent of Wong’s symbolic theme of emphasising the past while offering hope for the future that is prominent in his works.
